Sir, It is always encouraging for those of us who work as professional archivists to see news involving historical records in your paper, and the discovery in Lincolnshire of a school punishment book is no exception (report, Mar 31).
However, this should be seen in the context of the thousands of such punishment records preserved in record offices, and generally available to the public once they are of an age where none of the pupils involved is still likely to be living for the most part. With well over 600 miles of historical records preserved in local authority record offices alone, our archival heritage is unimaginably rich.
It is disappointing that there is such little public awareness of the wealth of material that survives on our forebears. This is to a large degree explained by the low level of resources made available to preserve the archives and make them available, particularly in the education of children.
